How to fit a rear shock absorber on a BMW 320D

Rear shock absorber removal

1) KEY TO SIMBOLS

2) Equipment

Special tools TOOL CODE
Torque wrench
Special tools TOOL CODE

3) To perform the following operations, you will need to:
4) Lift the vehicle on the lift bridge.
5) Disassemble the rear wheels.
6) Unscrew the indicated nut. ( Figure 1 )

7) Lift suspension arm and extract the shock absorber from the lower mounting.
8) Unscrew the indicated nuts and remove the bush. ( Figure 2 )

9) Remove luggage compartment trim to operate on shock absorbers mountings.
10) Unscrew the indicated nut and remove shock absorber mounting. (Figure 3 )

11) Remove the shock absorber. ( Figure 4 )

12) Remove the bottom of the shock absorber upper mounting. ( Figure 5 )

13) Remove the indicated components. ( Figure 6 )

14) Be sure to dispose used components according to the laws. Ask local authorities for further information about recycling.
RE-ASSEMBLY
1) Fit the indicated components. ( Figure 7 )

2) Lubricate the bottom of the upper mounting in the indicated area. (Figure 8)

3) Attention
4) Always replace screws and self-locking nuts.
5) Proceed in reverse order to the dismounting.
6) Fit rear wheels.
7) Return the car to the ground.
8) Check axle geometries.

Part Tightening torque
Shock absorber upper mounting nut (M10) 27 Nm
Shock absorber upper mounting nut (M14) 37 Nm
Shock absorber lower mounting nut 38 Nm
Bush nuts on lower arm 60 Nm
Wheel screws 120 Nm
Part Tightening torque
